Why £1 shops are great for equestrian buys....

We all know how expensive horses can be, even when they are 100% fit and healthy. So finding bargains can really help along the way so funds can be used for other aspects whether that be training, entries or even the rarity of buying something for yourself and not the horse!

Pound shops can be found just about anywhere now a days, in fact they practically keep our local high street going, and its not surprising when you pop in and can find beauties like this.

So here’s my monthly round up of star £1 buys for the equestrian-saver-savy that can currently be found in a variety of pound shops…..

  1. The good old potty. I’ve been very vocal in the past about how fab these are in their secondary purpose of pole raisers. Light weight, ideal for pole placing, small and stackable still make them a star buy!

2.     Mop buckets! Now these are possibly an upgrade from the good old potty. They stand higher than a potty but still have a base system that when used upside down help to keep poles in place, thus making them a perfect Cavaletti Ends. Their neon colours and size can also make them suitable for fillers if wanted too

3.   Head Lamp- Light weight, adjustable and easy to use. Yes you still need to purchase batteries but its still a useful bit of kit for the yard i.e field cleaning, shoe hunting, hacking, back up light in case electric is off.

4.   Blue Tarpaulin- an ideal solution for recreating a water tray so long as used on a non-windy day and you have access to 2 poles! If nothing else its always useful to have these for protecting/ covering haylage from cat scratching!

5.    Planters- there’s a variety of styles and sizes available. They can once again be used as fillers, as actual planters sol long as you have a plant to recreate topiary boxes as seen around dressage arenas/ for use for dressing SJ’s. Also if you have access to some spare white and black paint you can paint them and use them as 3D dressage markers.

6.  Cohesive Support Bandages- AKA vet wrap- They are shorter in height than standard vet wrap but useful/ great value as 2 for £1 in the pound shops.

7.  KT Tape- Pre cut strips of the popular kinesio tape in different colours. Ideal for keeping in your first aid boxes (hopefully won't be needed though!).

8.  Planter Liners- These large circular lightweight flexible disks can create fab coffin fillers and the horses find them quite spooky!

  1. 9.   Vacuum storage bags- Ideal for rug storage especially as we’re heading into spring/ summer, ensure your and your horse’s winter woollies are kept clean, mouse-nibbled free and organised!

  1. Garden Spray Bottles- Very handy in preparation for making your own fly spray/ potions!
Picture
  1. Icewrap- Personally haven’t used this yet but a £1 it was worth a buy as without requiring refrigerating its ideal to be kept in the wagon just in case I decide to have a flop off early in the season!

Of course there’s plenty of other buys that tend to be guaranteed regulars i.e. sponges, cotton wool, mint polo’s etc but I’ll try and keep up a review of season specialities that may be worth getting so keep an eye out on the blog for upcoming £1 buys!
